TFI Local Link is a local public transport service that provides better links between rural transport services and national bus and rail services throughout Ireland. These bus services are low cost and available for anyone wishing to travel to or from their local town, village or parish.
The bus services are managed by 15 transport coordination units, or TCUs, throughout the country operating as TFI Local Link, on behalf of the National Transport Authority. Each office manages the day to day requests and delivery of bus services in their area. These offices open from 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday and operate all year round except for Public Holidays.
The two types of local bus services that TFI Local Link delivers are Door-to-Door and Regular Rural Services. Door-to-Door Routes are a rural bus service with the added benefit of collecting and dropping off passengers at their homes. These services are demand responsive which means they require pre-booking with your TFI Local Link office, ideally the day before travelling, to be collected at your home. Regular Rural Services operate a daily bus service on a fixed route and timetable like a standard Bus Éireann service.

TFI Local Link bus services connect communities throughout rural Ireland as part of the TFI Public Transport Network. TFI Local Link bus services are affordable and available for anyone wishing to travel to or from their local town or village. TFI Local Link operate two different types of service; Regular Rural Bus Services and Door-to-Door Bus Services.
TFI Local Link Regular Rural Bus Services operate on a fixed route between towns and villages and have a scheduled timetable, just like any other public transport bus service. Regular Rural Bus Service timetables are designed, to maximise connectivity with Bus Éireann, commercial bus services and Iarnród Éireann networks to facilitate passengers who may need to connect to the national TFI network.
These services are frequently used by local residents, commuters, students and tourists alike.
TFI Local Link Door-to-Door Bus Services are bus routes with the added benefit of collecting and dropping off passengers directly at their homes. These services require pre-booking with your TFI Local Link office, ideally at least the day before travelling. Door-to-Door Bus Services operate a timetable that is subject to change. Timetables frequency for Door to Door Bus Services can vary from daily to once a week, or fortnightly.
Door to Door Bus Services offer great peace of mind to passengers living in rural areas who might otherwise have no way to access public transport and the freedom it brings.
TFI Local Link bus services are available to everyone and provide vital transport services to all. These bus services provide safe and accessible rural community transport, while also catering to the needs of the elderly and those with disabilities. Free Travel Passes are accepted on all TFI Local Link services and cash fares are payable by anyone who does not hold a Free Travel Pass. By providing a regular, scheduled public transport service in remote areas TFI Local Link offers greater travel and commuting opportunities to rural residents.
TFI Local Link provides accessible buses across its day and evening services, and can divert its routes if pre-booked by phone for pick-ups where residents have mobility difficulties. 90% of TFI Local Link bus services have provisions for children’s buggies and wheelchairs.
Regular Rural Services operate a daily bus service on a fixed route and timetable with reduced timetables on weekends. These local bus services connect towns, villages and parishes and are available for anyone wishing to travel. The timetables are designed to ensure connectivity with Bus Éireann and Iarnrod Éireann networks to facilitate passengers who wish to make onward journeys whether for education, employment, health or recreational reasons.

TFI Local Link is a development of the Rural Transport Programme (RTP) and was launched in 2007 to build on the success of its predecessor the Rural Transport Initiative (RTI).
The Rural Transport Initiative was established as a pilot project in 2002 to address issues of unmet transport in rural areas. The RTI specifically focused on responding to rural isolation and enhancing the mobility, accessibility and community participation of local people, particularly those at risk of social exclusion. Such was the success of the RTI and its successor the RTP that by 2013 1.74million passenger journeys were taken.
The RTP was selected for review under the ‘Value for Money and Policy Review Initiative’, the Governments evaluation of public expenditure programmes, in line with a commitment given at the launch of the Rural Transport Programme in 2007.
The Review was carried out by the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport and the report was published early 2012. Until April 2013, the RTP was managed by Pobal however this responsibility was then transferred to the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the NTA has been tasked with overseeing the implementation of the recommendations of this review.
The placing of the responsibility of the RTP and all integrated local and rural transport with the NTA, allows for better oversight of all state funded local and rural transport services. It enables the development of better links between local and rural transport services and national bus and rail services. It also enables the NTA to identify gaps in service provision and to fill those gaps in the most effective way.
Recommendations of the Value for Money and Policy Review Initiative detailed a plan for an organisational restructuring of the RTP. This plan concentrated on the establishment of 15 Local Link Areas of operation to local and rural transport services in these areas.

TFI Local Link services are available to everyone with a significant focus on providing accessible transport options for passengers. Free Travel Passes are accepted on all TFI Local link services and cash fares are payable by anyone who doesn’t have a Free Travel Pass. The Door-to- Door services are a particular feature of TFI Local Link. Collecting and dropping off passengers to their homes offers great peace of mind to passengers living in rural areas who might otherwise have no way to access public transport.
An additional feature of TFI Local Link, which is helpful for many customers, is the willingness of drivers or other staff to assist. Small gestures can make a real difference to a person living in an isolated area when they are making the decision to venture out into their community.
Being able to get out and about is a vital way to stay part of the local community and to access local amenities. Local bus travel is a lifeline for many people who do not drive and very often this isn’t an option for those who live rurally or have no local bus service available to them. For others, declining mobility may be preventing them from using public transport due to needing extra assistance.
The Rural Transport Programme mission statement is “to provide a quality nationwide community based public transport system in rural Ireland which responds to Local needs,” says Margaret Malone, Rural Transport Programme Manager. “The key priorities of the Rural Transport Programme continue to include addressing rural social exclusion and the integration of rural transport services with other public transport services,” says Malone, “The NTA in conjunction with Local Link offices will continue to identify improvements in existing services and develop appropriate new routes based on the availability of resource. Greater integration with existing public transport services between towns/ villages will also continue to be a key focus of the Programme”.

80% of TFI Local Link services are wheelchair accessible. Ideally services with wheelchair requests should be pre-booked by contacting your nearest TFI Local Link so a suitable vehicle is available.
